Yep, you read that right.

Made it about 200 pages in. I can’t do 560 pages of this, this will send me spiraling into a depression. For what Kuang is doing, speaking as an African- American female who studied Mandarin for over 10 years, this is amazing. The takes on racism and translation are accurate, genius. The footnotes? She nails it.

However, this book is making me hate reading cuz it’s just depressing to me.

I’d rather concentrate on other books in my TBR. I may pick this up at a later date.

Probably not.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

  1. I just finished her first novel, The Poppy War and I know how you feel. It was compelling and brutally truthful and quite depressing to read.

    1. I skimmed the rest of the book this morning and the DNF was soooo the right call for me. I know my limits. I appreciated your review! I will be passing on the Poppy War.

  2. A fiction authors goal should be to entertain their fans. If they want to preach and tell a message, that is what non-fiction is for. If you want to tell horrible, depressing and soul-sucking stories, then do the world a favor….

That’s kind of my Wheel of Authors 😀

    1. Yep, I get writing to expose issues and using fiction to make people understand in a way they haven’t or couldn’t otherwise. But it was 560 pages of depression. Did I mention it was 560 pages? My anxiety levels- everytime I went to read it, it was like storm clouds. Lol

      1. New authors are products of, and contributing to, the global zeitgeist of depression and horror that is growing by the day. I’m afraid we’re only going to see more of this 😦
